Ann Rose and Susan Hill have something to say. Every morning for the past several years, they've chatted on the phone and ranted about the events of the day. Now, instead of ranting to each other, they will air their opinions on the internet with Hot Flash Report which will focus on abortion, reproductive rights, birth control and right-wing sexual hypocrisy. Along with a hand-picked group of 'Flasher' columnists, they will dissect the latest spin on the news and give you a piece of their mind. Ann and Susan are both long time liberal Democrats
and abortion rights activists with national credentials.

The portrait of choice is sitting next to you on the bus, coddling an infant at the grocery or maybe even looking out from the ladies' room mirror. A group of artist-activists in Canada has decided that it's time to picture choice and mount it for everyone to see.
The result: Arts4Choice.

Let Them All Change Their Names!

A report from Idaho indicates that U.S. Senate candidate Marvin Richardson legally changed his name to Marvin Pro-Life Richardson.
This seemed weird at first glance, but wait, why not get all anti-abortion legislators to change their names! And then mandate that all anti-abortion legislation change names to add "anti-abortion," or heck, even "pro-life." Now that would be informed consent!

Film, television and popular culture touch many lives. So does abortion. And, it seems, pop culture is a "battleground" for abortion. This clearly seems true today, but it's also been pretty much the case throughout movie history.

The Anti-Choice Witch Hunt

Currently in Kansas, a grand jury is investigating Dr. George Tiller, one of only a handful of late-term abortion providers in the U.S. The petitioners are convinced that the Dr. has violated state regulations pertaining to late termination of pregnancy.
This is the second time in as many years the doctor has been thusly investigated as he is a top target of such anti-choice organizations like Kansans for Life (like the rest of Kansans are for death?), and Operation Rescue (they aren't interested in rescuing `born' children from anything).

"I'll Be Home For Christmas": On Christmas, From A Former Navy Wife

I've been playing Christmas music lately, while reading or sewing or wrapping packages (for financial reasons, we're lean and mean this year; I scrounged through my "I bought this and never gave it to someone" drawer" for many of them). One of my favorite CDs features Bing Crosby in a concert for the troop during WW IIs, and I always tear up when I hear "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and it resonates strongly with me. The final line is "...If only in my dreams." The song was written in 1943, at the height of World War II. It summed up the feelings of lonely G.I.s in Europe and the Pacific, dreaming of home and family while a war raged and hoping that next year they would indeed be home for Christmas.
The song has special meaning for me. As most of you Kossacks know, I was a Navy wife for 15 out of the 21 years I've been with my husband as wife and lover.

Are Teen Births Rising?

A new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control tells us that for the first time in 14 years, there was an increase in the rates of teenage births to 41.9 births per 1000 teen women aged 15 - 19, up from 40.5 in 2005.
What the stories and the headlines don't tell you is that is approximately the same rate as 2004 and lower than it was in 2003. They also don't highlight that the birth rate was up for every age cohort of women.

Taking away women's rights one egg at a time!

Colorado Initiative #36. Remember that number. Remember that number as a catalyst for not only trying to take away women's rights, but for restrictions on birth control, and the can of worms it will open in 2008. The initiative calls for changing the definition of `person' in the Colorado Constitution to include any human being from the moment of fertilization; giving fertilized eggs specific rights. There are certainly a number of problems with the initiative itself, including its wording, intentions and repercussions. For the Colorado Supreme Court to allow this initiative to continue is a disaster waiting to happen.

This morning, the presiding U.S. Catholic Bishops--nine elderly white men--decided to tell all American Roman Catholics how to vote in the 2008 elections, including the expectation that they would vote against any candidate who supports legalized abortion.
This just in from the AP:
BALTIMORE - Roman Catholics voting in the 2008 elections must heed church teaching when deciding which candidates and policies to support, U.S. bishops said Wednesday.

Unbelievably, it looks like the Democratically-controlled US Congress is going to agree to the Bush Administrations request for MORE monies for abstinence-only-until-marriage education. The new total in the reconciled appropriations bill is $141 million, $28 million more than it was this year.
Here's some news from our friends at SIECUS:

Common Ground on Abortion

I'm out in Los Angeles for a series of meetings on LGBT issues, and came across this editorial in the LA Times that I wanted to recommend to you.
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-richards29oct29,0,5202785.story?coll=la-opinion-rightrail
The editorial, written by my long term colleage Cory Richards from the Guttmacher Institute, examines what he calls the "adoption vs abortion myth." We often hear from politicians as well as evangelical leaders that efforts to increase adoptions is part of the common ground strategy to reduce the numbers of abortions in the U.S.

Deja Vu Appointment, All Over Again

There's a picture of a smiling woman passing through news agencies. Could this woman be smiling because she's just been named the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs, which means she's now in charge of the nation's family planning program?
Dr. Susan Orr, like other recent Bush appointees to the position, actually opposes federal support for contraception. She is a former official with the anti-choice Family Research Council. According to news reports, she has fought against federal employees health insurance including contraception, has taught abstinence-only-until-marriage education, and cheered the Mexico City Gag Rule. I haven't found anything about whether she has actually worked against the Title X family planning program, which provides access to services for low income women, but I'm guessing she's not going to be a big supporter of services to adolescents.
