About Us

Ann Rose and Susan Hill have something to say. Every morning for the past several years, they've chatted on the phone and ranted about the events of the day. Now, instead of ranting to each other, they will air their opinions on the internet with Hot Flash Report which will focus on abortion, reproductive rights, birth control and right-wing sexual hypocrisy. Along with a hand-picked group of 'Flasher' columnists, they will dissect the latest spin on the news and give you a piece of their mind. Ann and Susan are both long time liberal Democrats and abortion rights activists with national credentials.

The New York Times editorializes that voters need to consider that the next president is likely to appoint several Supreme Court justices, pointing out that if elected, John McCain will likely appoint justices who will lead the charge to eliminate the rights to both abortion and habeas corpus.

The Washington Post asks why Sarah Palin has granted so few interviews since her selection as John McCain's running mate, saying that while McCain is entitled to his choice, he is not entitled to keep the public from being able to make an informed assessment of his judgment.

The Washington Post examines South Dakota's proposed abortion ban, which would ban abortion except in cases of rape, incest and a narrow interpretation of the health and life of the woman, and if passed could be used to bring a challenge to Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court.

Obama's campaign responds to McCain's abortion attack ads with television spots highlighting McCain's extremist views (via Politico).

Legal experts question the constitutionality of a Texas judge's ruling ordering a woman to stop having children as a condition of her probation (via the Austin-American Statesman).

In light of many studies and a recent AP article, if people were truly interested in significantly reducing the number of abortions being performed, they would first look at the demographics of those receiving abortion services and specifically, the conditions in which unintended pregnancies and resulting abortions are more likely to occur.

Ohio faces restrictions on women's access to reproductive health services.  Margo Pierce laments the state of choice in the Cleveland Free Times

Wisconsin's bill requiring hospitals to offer emergency contraception to rape victims has passed in the state Assembly, and its next stop would've been the governor's desk.  Unfortunately, Republicans delayed the movement of the legislation, and it will now have to wait until the full Assembly convenes in February.  Advocates of the bill have fought for six years to get it passed

Currently in Kansas, a grand jury is investigating Dr. George Tiller, one of only a handful of late-term abortion providers in the U.S. The petitioners are convinced that the Dr. has violated state regulations pertaining to late termination of pregnancy.

This is the second time in as many years the doctor has been thusly investigated as he is a top target of such anti-choice organizations like Kansans for Life (like the rest of Kansans are for death?), and Operation Rescue (they aren't interested in rescuing `born' children from anything).

"On September 11, we saw clearly that evil exists in this world, and that it does not value life ... Now we are engaged in a fight against evil and tyranny to preserve and protect life." - George W. Bush in 2002, linking abortion rights with terrorism,  as he declared the 29th anniversary of Roe v. Wade to be "National Sanctity of Human Life Day."

Bush has used his Oval Office years to limit reproductive freedom and stack critical posts with right-wingers bent on rolling back the clock.

And now it appears yet another reactionary Bush appointee is on track to get a lifetime position as a federal judge...

There's a picture of a smiling woman passing through news agencies. Could this woman be smiling because she's just been named the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs, which means she's now in charge of the nation's family planning program?

Dr. Susan Orr, like other recent Bush appointees to the position, actually opposes federal support for contraception. She is a former official with the anti-choice Family Research Council. According to news reports, she has fought against federal employees health insurance including contraception, has taught abstinence-only-until-marriage education, and cheered the Mexico City Gag Rule. I haven't found anything about whether she has actually worked against the Title X family planning program, which provides access to services for low income women, but I'm guessing she's not going to be a big supporter of services to adolescents.

As an abortion provider (MD) I performed an early first trimester abortion on a college senior some years ago. Prior to meeting me she had told a clinic counselor that she was the president of her campus "pro-life" organization. Think about that. That must mean that she was one of their most committed and hardest workers against legal and safe professional abortion care for several years, but when she got pregnant herself, she was in the clinic having an abortion within a week of her positive pregnancy test.

As I completed her abortion, I asked her what she was now going to do about her affiliation with that anti-choice club. Startled, she gasped, sat abruptly up on the operating table, and, with eyes booming horror, blurted out in a tremulous, frightened voice, . . .

from Talk to Action

Equipped to Serve is a popular training resource for crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) or, as they call themselves among themselves, "pregnancy center ministries." The first of the "Seven Fundamentals" at Equipped to Serve begins as follows.

"Truth is a very different thing from fact. ... Truth in the inward parts is a power, not an opinion."

Maybe that explains why the "truth" presented by CPCs strays so very far from the facts.
